ICSI Procedure

The investigations listed by an IVF specialist and the hormonal injections availed in the procedure to produce a significant amount of eggs are similar to the conventional In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). After the eggs are efficiently collected and identified by the embryologist, the Cumulus Oophorus, which is the outer layer of cells around each egg, is removed to view the egg without any obstructions. The eggs should be at a mature stage (M2) during the ICSI procedure. The procedure is thus accomplished with the use of a microscope using micromanipulation devices: micromanipulators, microinjectors, micropipettes. The mature oocyte is stabilized by a holding pipette on the left. Then, from the opposite side, a thin, hollow needle is pierced through the oolema and into the inner part of the oocyte.

The needle is loaded with a single active sperm which will be released into the oocyte. On following day after the procedure, the oocyte is then checked for signs of fertilization.

When the number of sperm is minute or has abnormal morphology or motility, it will result in the impairment in the function of the sperm. With ICSI, a single sperm is carefully and precisely placed within the egg.

ICSI Facts

Fertilization occurs in 50% to 80% of injected eggs. A total of 30% of all ICSI cycles performed resulted in live birth. According to an IVF doctor, younger patients are more probable to achieve favorable results from ICSI. Because ICSI enables infertile couples to achieve pregnancy and become parents of their own genetical child, it is a preferred method that is more prominent than Donor Insemination or Adoption.
