In Vitro Fertilization

The process of combining egg and sperm in an IVF clinic laboratory dish is referred to as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Occurring inside the fallopian tubes of a woman, the process In Vitro Fertilization is intriguingly fascinating. In a finely orchestrated sequence, the fertilized egg travels to the uterus and settles there as the early embryo, which gradually leads to pregnancy of the woman.

Unfortunately for some couples, achieving pregnancy without any assistance of IVF specialist and clinic becomes an unnatural task. In those cases, IVF empowers couple to concept a child and enable them to achieve pregnancy the way they planned.

The process of In Vitro Fertilization at IVF centre encompasses the formation of a large number of eggs which are removed from the ovary and combined with sperms outside the body. The embryos formed in IVF clinic are then transferred to the women's uterus to help her achieve a normal pregnancy.

Indications of IVF:

  • Tubal Problems - a woman's fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged, which could be due to infection, tuberculosis, previous tubal pregnancy, endometriosis, tubectomy.
  • Severe endometriosis which affects tubal function, fertilization as well as implantation of embryo in the uterus.
  • Unexplained fertility: where conception fails to occur despite the couple proving normal and healthy through different tests.
  • No pregnancy after repeated cycles of IUI in the clinic.
  • Patients who stop having regular menstruation or those whose eggs / ovaries are damaged by surgery or disease, can achieve pregnancy at IVF centre by opting for IVF procedure.
  • The patients whose uterus has been damaged due to infection or removed due to surgery can have their own child by IVF through surrogacy.
  • Prolonged infertility despite ineffective routine treatments in the clinic.
  • Infertility resulting in women after 40 or after menopause.

Procedure:

  • In the IVF procedure, an investigation process at an IVF centre is accounted which includes testing of semen, ovarian and uterine cavity assessment.
  • The patient is given daily injection of fertility hormones amounting to 8 to 12 days which ensures the development of eggs in ovaries. The injections can be procured by the patient at their home or self-administered by themselves. The patients have to visit the centre 3 to 5 times where the formation of the eggs are checked with ultrasound.
  • Laser injection for final maturation of eggs (human chorionic gonadotrophin) is given in the clinic when the follicles have reached their optimum size.
  • After 34 to 36 hours have passed after the last injection, the eggs are then removed.
  • The process of retrieving eggs or collecting is done under careful sedation and Anaesthesia to ensure that the patient does not suffer any discomfort. The removal of the eggs in the clinic is accomplished with the utilization of a needle attached to the ultrasound probe.
  • The eggs are intimately placed closed to sperms so that the combination of sperm and egg takes place appropriately. After the formation of Embryo, it will disassemble into 4 or 6 cells. When this stage has been reached, a healthy amount of embryo will be placed inside the uterus.
  • Following the embryo transfer, a blood test will be conducted 14 days later to confirm pregnancy.

Precautions to take:

  • The pregnancy that is conceived with In Vitro Fertilization in the clinic is similar to normal pregnancy and does not require the patient to undertake any special precaution deterring from normal pregnancy procedure.
  • The patient should avoid strenuous activity and should ensure that they are mentally and physically relaxed.
  • The patient can return to work only after she has rested for a few days after the procedure.
